The Special One

Or should that be ‘the Happy One’? José Mourinho may have rechristened himself during his second stint at Chelsea, but his managerial career, which has spanned Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, is without a doubt very special. Love him or hate him, he is one of the best managers in the business.

So, where do you start with Mourinho? With the fact that he earned his managerial spurs under the late Sir Bobby Robson at Barcelona? That he guided Portuguese side Porto to Champions League glory? That he turned Chelsea into a dominant force in the English Premier League and Europe? That he won six trophies, including the Italian Treble in 2009–10, in his three years at Inter Milan? That he won La Liga, Copa del Rey and Supercopa titles with Real Madrid in Spain despite playing against Guardiola’s Barcelona? Or with his UEFA Manager of the Year award in 2003 and 2004? Or his FIFA World Coach of the Year award in 2010? Or his nine-year, 150-match, four-club unbeaten home-league record?

And then there are the accolades he has picked up outside the game: New Statesman Man of the Year and Spanish Rolling Stone Rockstar of the Year, as well as his own children’s cartoon in Portugal called Mourinho and the Special Ones. Wherever he goes, he wins. Chelsea must be happy to have him back.
